Elmer’s Island again open to public access December 15, 2008
Gov. Bobby Jindal announced Dec. 15 that Elmer’s Island, a once popular destination for coastal fishermen, campers and other outdoor enthusiasts, is open again for public recreational use. The state is opening 250 acres of Elmer’s Island for public use after extensive title research found that this portion of the island is the property of Louisiana.

Cougar capture in residential neighborhood unsuccessful December 2, 2008
The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries (LDWF) and Bossier City Police Department (BPPD) responded to a call on Sunday, Nov. 30 that a cougar had been spotted in a residential neighborhood in Bossier City. LDWF’s efforts to immobilize the 125-pound cat with a tranquilizer dart were not immediately successful and BPPD officers shot the animal to minimize the possible threat to public safety.

Fishing guide Barry Brechtel dies in truck crash November 26, 2008
Barry Brechtel, well-known and highly regarded fishing guide and part-owner of Breton Sound Marina in Hopedale, died early Tuesday morning, Nov. 25, when his pickup truck slammed a utility pole on the Florissant Highway in lower St. Bernard Parish.

Marine debris project and website expanded November 3, 2008
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) has enhanced its Gulf of Mexico Marine Debris Project website.
